Tribute to the School of National Jewish Art Music,
Vol. 1: Selection of songs and opera arias
Shirelle Dashevsky, soprano. Uri Brener, piano.
The Society for Jewish Folk Music in St. Petersburg, along with its break-off groups in Moscow, Berlin, and elsewhere, spearheaded a tremendous movement for composing "Jewish" classical music during the 1910s and '20s. Initially, its composers produced straight-forward arrangements of Jewish folk melodies, but quickly began searching for more creative ways of composing original Jewish music. The works on this CD represent a wide range of ideas for how this could be done: by using snippets of Biblical and liturgical chant to compose original melodies (Achron and Krein); by setting old melodies to new lyrics (Lubov and Saminsky); by composing in large operatic forms (Milner and Weinberg); and by developing new theories of Jewish harmony rooted in Biblical chant and non-mainstream Jewish folklore (songs in major, pentatonic, and modal keys that shun augmented seconds).
The importance of Shirelle Dashevsky's work lies not only in her vocal beauty, artistry, and stylistic understanding, but also in her ongoing dedication to making this neglected repertoire accessible. Her earliest recordings of songs by Saminsky and Milner appeared on YouTube in 2010-2011, a time when almost none of this music was available on social media, and she has since then uploaded over two dozen more. With gratitude, I was able to use these YouTube recordings in my lectures, which I presented to Jewish communities throughout the United States and Israel between 2011 and 2017. In 2012-2013, Dashevsky discovered the long-lost manuscripts of two operas by Milner and Weinberg: until then, such large-scale vocal works had not been available, and it is hoped that her present recording of arias from these two operas will enable and spark further research and performance. Furthermore, many of the works on this album have never before been commercially recorded, and the scores are very difficult to find. Not only has this expanded the number of pieces I am familiar with, but it has given me – and other scholars – the possibility of analyzing these pieces sonically (through recordings), and not only visually (through sheet music). Finally, her penchant for improvisation and editorship in her performances – inspired by both cantorial and operatic traditions – offer performers and scholars a deeper hearing of the Jewish folk and synagogal practices that so inspired these composers.
I look forward to Dashevsky's further activities in this field with excitement, curiosity, and gratitude.
